Dead zones and data saving: That's why offline games are worthwhile

If you take a look at the App Store, you will quickly notice how many games only work if you are forced to play online. Because most games rely on a competitive online component. However, not everyone wants to compete with others in relaxed gaming. A "digital detox" can also be a good reason to switch off the internet on your smartphone and completely free yourself from the daily online compulsion.

The problem: You still have 3 hours until your next appointment and don't know what to do with your time. There are offline games for in between, which pass the time and are fun at the same time. In times when multiplayer games dominate the market, it is becoming increasingly difficult to find really good offline games, especially in the mobile sector. But don't despair, ask Mytik! In our list we have listed what we think are the best offline games of the year for you.

The best gaming smartphones in the price check

Your cell phone can no longer handle current mobile games? Then you will find current offers for the best gaming smartphones in the following widget. In the linked article you will also find our current best list for gaming mobile phones.

By the way, if you use Google Play Games or Apple's Game Center and are keen on achievements, you can play the games offline without hesitation. Because the next time you connect to the Internet, the points you have collected will be credited to you and synchronized with the server.

Our tip: start the game once with an internet connection so that it can load all the necessary data. So on the plane you have to think about this before take-off. In case of doubt, you can also do without the Internet – just without current game data. {alertInfo}

But enough with the preliminary banter! Here are the offline games that we would like to recommend you, which are a cross section of different genres. As always, this leaderboard is also a subjective one and we look forward to your feedback and your ideas for further offline games. We added the first four games of this list with the last update (January 2022).

Archero

I've spent countless weapons, armor and hours in Archero. The action game received the 2019 award for the most innovative game in the Google Play Store. You control one of a total of 20 unlockable heroes and have to defeat countless hordes of monsters. To do this, you travel to different game worlds, which in turn are divided into up to 50 rooms. The attraction of the game is also explained simply - the more you play, the better you get at the game and correspondingly more game worlds and items you can unlock.

What looks easy is not even that easy. Shooting is automatic, but all sorts of enemy attacks will fly by your ears, which you should dodge skillfully. This can be more difficult than it seems, especially in boss fights. As you roam the worlds, gaining experience points will grant you certain abilities that will allow you to defeat even the strongest opponents. It is important to pay attention to the choice of suitable skills. For example, the "Piercing Shot" is best paired with a "Multi-Shot".

In addition, the mobile game is regularly updated and always has exciting events. The ads are also kept within limits so you won't be overwhelmed by ads after each run. The game is perfect for in-between times, the levels don't last too long and your progress is saved automatically. So if you like a lot of action, you will certainly be happy with this game. Here's another tip: Unfortunately, the sound is a major shortcoming, so it's better to switch it off.

Titan Quest

Titan Quest was released for the PC back in 2006. Back then, you couldn't even imagine how powerful our smartphones would be these days (not to mention that the first iPhone appeared a year later). Titan Quest takes you into the world of mythology and the realm of the titans trying to take over the earth. The action role-playing game not only offers nostalgic graphics, as known from games like Sacred or Diablo II, but also a good level system and an interesting game world.

If you want to really step on the titans' toes and like to immerse yourself in other worlds, you will certainly find what you are looking for at Titan Quest. The porting to mobile also worked well, even if the controls sometimes seem a bit imprecise. The game also promises over 60 hours of fun and if that's not enough, you can jump straight into the Legendary Edition, in which you can find additional DLC's.

Plague Inc.

Admittedly, the fact that a game like Plague Inc. experienced a boom at the beginning of the corona pandemic is somewhat morbid. However, the game is a really good pastime with its innovative concept. In the standard version, you as the virus must terrify the world population as they try to find a cure. There are mutations available for your illness, but you shouldn't advance them too quickly, otherwise it'll quickly be game over. The strategy game is about developing the disease cleverly without getting too hectic.

The game offers different levels of difficulty, which you can unlock after successfully completing a level. You can also unlock gene mutations to increase your disease from the start. This is incredibly important, especially at higher levels. Meanwhile there is also "The Cure". You take on the part of researching remedies and have to fight against an unknown disease. However, the gameplay does not change. So if you're in the mood for a strategy game where you don't control hordes of armies, you'll definitely enjoy Plague Inc.!

Stardew Valley

Life on your own farm can be very comforting – at least virtually. Stardew Valley was already considered one of the best indie games of all time when it was officially released in 2016 for PC. While games like "Hay Day" or "Farmville" rely on active cooperation, you have your small farm in Stardew Valley all to yourself. Whether you take care of animals, cultivate fields or do some shopping in the city is entirely up to you.

Above all, lovers of games like "Harvest Moon" or "Animal Crossing" should get their money's worth with this mobile game. By the way, the 16-bit game "Stardew Valley" is also an RPG. Means you can interact with the NPC's to build a relationship with them. This will certainly help you further in the course of the game. The developer also provides constant performance and content updates, allowing you to spend countless hours on your farm. My motto has recently been: Put on your straw hat and pack your shovel, I'm going to the country now.

Alto’s Odyssey

We have already recommended this chilled game to you elsewhere because of its beautiful graphics. In combination with the pleasant sound and the wonderfully unexciting gameplay, "Alto's Odyssey" is a pleasant way to kill time, even offline.

Especially when you're offline for a long time - for example on a flight - you don't just need a game that can be played offline. But also preferably one that is relaxing and captivates you throughout the flight. All of this applies to Alto's Odyssey, which is why we would like to recommend this endless runner to you.

Grid

The racing game Grid is also one that we would like to recommend. You get racing with excellent graphics, numerous cars, tracks and modes, you can unlock a lot of additional stuff and more. This results in good long-term motivation and, above all, Grid is one of the very few high-quality racing games where you don't have to pay countless in-app purchases!

In other words: you leaf through almost eleven euros on the table, but you have everything you need to be happy offline. You don't have to constantly wait until you can continue gambling or buy permission to continue playing with money. In addition, you don't have to invest in tracks, modes or vehicles either.

Mini Metro

Is the born city planner in you? In Mini Metro for Android and iOS you have to equip the largest and most diverse cities in the world with a working transport system. The game isn't overloaded, it's kept nicely abstract. You switch and rule on a 2D map, with the shadowy properties of the respective city.

The game uses symbols to show you which passengers have to be transported where. It is now up to you to connect the stations. Every week that passes in the game, you get new locomotives, lines, tunnels, bridges or wagons and can thus continue to grow. Important: Always keep an eye on the most important metro stations. If a station is overloaded, it's game over. The aim is not to go "game over" and to transport the most passengers during the game - this will increase your high score.

In normal mode, Mini Metro is always playable offline. There is also an online version of the "Daily" mode, where you can compete with players from all over the world.

Mekorama

Anyone who has played the game Monument Valley will also enjoy Mekorama for Android and iOS. In this offline game you control a small nameless robot through three-dimensional worlds. "Tap-to-Move" is used to indicate the direction in which the little robot should move.

The difficulty with this game is that the towers on which the robot moves are three-dimensional. So you have to turn a lot in higher levels and include the elevators and tunnels on the way so that the little robot gets to its destination safely. To make matters worse, the robot can also fall down - in this case you have to start the level from the beginning.

The nice thing about Mekorama is that you not only have 50 pre-made levels, but you can also create your own levels. Worlds you have created yourself can then be shared with friends around the world via QR code. But even the 50 ready-made levels are difficult enough. If you have VR glasses, you can even play Mekorama as a VR version, but the version then costs 4.29 euros.
